Stanley Steemer - Bait and Switch
I called my local Stanley Steemer company yesterday to set up an appointment to have grout and tiles cleaned. I was very impressed and assured that my grout would look like new with each tile individually cleaned. All stains would be removed and the tiles would sparkle. I declined the special sealant offered for long-term protection since I intend to put the house on the market. Delighted, I was quoted a price and looked forward to seeing them the next day.
Unfortunately, the next day, after looking at my 8-year old tiles, the technician informed me that I would need the special sealant to create the clean look I wanted and that the price would more than double. Without it, my tiles would not be free of stains and the grout would not have an even appearance--meaning that the color of the grout would vary throughout the floor.
It seems that what the sales representative who quoted the job had promised, just doubled in price--a difference of several hundred dollars. Calling customer service only confirmed what the technician had said, leaving me no choice but to cancel and ask them to leave.
Without knowing, I suspect this is a standard tactic used by Stanley Steemer in the effort to entice customers to book appointments and then increase their estimates before actually starting the work.
